The Importance of
Remote Healthcare

  1. Appearance is Important
  2. Have good lighting, smile, no gum/food/drink, look directly into the camera, try to avoid distractions in the background (like pets or kids), appropriate attire - ideally crisp white buttoned lab coat.
  3. Expect Millisecond Delays in Back-and-Forth Conversation
  4. Anticipate and pause more than in regular in-person interaction, don’t begin speaking until the patient is done, Etc., don’t “step” on each other.
  5. Prepare for your Telehealth Meetings in Advance
  6. Ensure that you have appropriate lighting, background and do not sit against a window to ensure privacy given the sensitivity of the discussions, Etc.
  7. Practice, Practice, Practice
  8. Try talking to a family member using FaceTime, Zoom, Webex, or similar. You can also practice your physical exam techniques with family members and see what works and doesn’t (i.e., positioning, lighting, etc.)
  9. Be Positive and Invest in the Opportunity
  10. This modality is here to stay and will only increase in prevalence and popularity.
