- Appearance is Important
- Have good lighting, smile, no gum/food/drink, look directly into the camera, try to avoid distractions in the background (like pets or kids), appropriate attire - ideally crisp white buttoned lab coat.
- Expect Millisecond Delays in Back-and-Forth Conversation
- Anticipate and pause more than in regular in-person interaction, don’t begin speaking until the patient is done, Etc., don’t “step” on each other.
- Prepare for your Telehealth Meetings in Advance
- Ensure that you have appropriate lighting, background and do not sit against a window to ensure privacy given the sensitivity of the discussions, Etc.
- Practice, Practice, Practice
- Try talking to a family member using FaceTime, Zoom, Webex, or similar. You can also practice your physical exam techniques with family members and see what works and doesn’t (i.e., positioning, lighting, etc.)
- Be Positive and Invest in the Opportunity
- This modality is here to stay and will only increase in prevalence and popularity.
